I love them... I hate them.... It’s hard to be a Tech fan.
This year was pretty tough. No bowls... no comment.
Check out this picture (below) of me with 27 other Tuba players in the 400-member Texas Tech Goin' Band From Raiderland! Contrary to popular belief, I wasn't a drummer (in ZIT), but instead a scholarship tuba player. They are called the Goin' Band because they were the first college marching band to travel to an away game. They have recently won the coveted Sudler Trophy which honors the best intercollegiate marching band in the country.
This picture is one of the very few "lights out" shows that the Goin' Band ever did, and I'm darn proud to say that I was in the 'A'. It was in the fall of 1987. When they turned out the lights, the entire stadium went 'oooooh' all at once. Nobody went to the concession stands, either.
Here's a photo from the top of the Houston Astrodome when we played there during a Houston Oilers game (Houston who?) after we played the UH game in 1987.
And just F.Y.I., Tech was the first to play my favorite march song, “March Grandioso” Goin' Band - Grandioso.mp3.
I am going to tell you now that the most incredible sound I've ever heard in my life was the Tech Band playing March Grandioso in the 'Tunnel'. The 'Tunnel' is the access tunnel to Jones Stadium that the band marches through when they enter the stadium before games. That particular pre-game, the tuba section was halfway through the tunnel when we hit that bottom note in the song. The reverberation off the walls shook me to the bone. It was just INCREDIBLE!! I stopped playing for just a second and said 'YEAH!!!'. To this day when I hear that song, the hairs stand up on the back of my neck.
Wes Welker - is doing really well in 2011. Keep it up!
Texas Tech Player.... For the Dolphins, Wes Welker became the first player in the NFL since the Super Bowl era (1966) to kick off, return both a kickoff and a punt, kick a field goal, and have a successful PAT all in the same game.
Proud to own a Wes #27 Texas Tech jersey!
Me with Baron Batch from Midland. This guy is so cool. I gave him a ball signed by Mike Leach (only) and he said he would take it back to Tech and have the other players sign it. Came back to Midland a month later, and the ball is covered with signatures! So humble... great Christian kid!
One of the greatest moments in Texas Tech history.
Oh - how sweet it was....
